Spammers

One measure I just googled and found a stopgap measure to help users of Blogger.com to avoid spamming comments.

In your administrative box, go to Settings/Comments/then click 'yes' next to Turn on Word Verification. This requires that several letters be copied in order to post a comment. A new feature recently added.

One problem. When I tried it, I couldn't read the first set of darn letters. If that happens, hit 'back arrow', then hit 'comment' again. You'll get a different set of letters. I could read the second.

Sorry for just one more step, but I've deleted two spam comments already this morning and two yesterday. They're increasing.

A thursday p.s. this is the first morning of three now that I've opened the blog not to find spam posted. Let's hope this continues to work!

This is a test of my word verification anti-spam campaign.

If this is not good enough (which it looks like it is), you can always try haloscan (http://www.haloscan.com)

Thanks for the additional tip. So far, I'm thinking this has to involve a person typing, so those will get through , no matter what, but the automated entries can't.

I've just set my blog to this...following in your good footsteps. I've seen worse verification code. Hotmail's is very hard to read and they seem to request it every so many emails you send out. I gues, in this day and age, security has to be of a maximum. B xx

Found your post in Cafe Cafe and posting this here to test. Also curious how it will appear from a Commenter viewpoint.

I also recently read about the Word Verification option in Blogger's home page, after I got a spam message in my comment box -- I haven't set up Word Verification in my own blog yet, but if I find I'm getting more spam it's nice to have the option.

Hi Lyle
I know. It's a pain in the rear to do it this way, but my spam suddenly increased dramatically. I also read that google is considering not listing blogger.com blogs anymore since so many spammers have signed up. If we all put this block into place, the spammers would have no place to post, but there are thousands on this blog and there's no way.

Thanks for testing this out.

I know what you mean. The spammers and hackers deserve a special hell where we lock them into a room lined with TV's all with reruns of The Brady Bunch all day and night.

Thanks Pris. They haven't gotten to my blog yet, but I've seen it elsewhere. This will save time trying to figure out how to block them and is appreciated.
