Modem Problems

My modem is dying. I unplugged it all night after it dialed ceaselessly for four hours late yesterday with me doing all of the 'reset' things to no avail, and it connected this morning but I don't know for how long. Since I still have no voice with this cold, my husband will have to make the call to Bellsouth, my server, and he may not until it starts dialing endlessly again. They have a way of testing them on their end. That's how I ended up getting this one when the old one died. Bottom line...if I disappear, I could be a few days missing while the thing ships.

Hi Pris. Thank you for your recent posts. I am definitely not a good blogger, but I enjoy reading your thoughts here, and your poetry. Thanks for posting the Dylan Thomas poem also...hope your modem gets taken care of!

Me too.

Wow. I didn't get broadband until a few years ago, and I thought I'd been the only dial-up holdout.

Cinderkeys, this is a dsl modem. I could never go back to dialup. We've had this for years now. We have a router for the two computers and the dsl modem gets us to the fast service.

Steve, you're very welcome and you're just fine as a blogger!!!!

Shoot. That means I really was the last dial-up holdout. :)

Yes you were. Tsk tsk. Actually, a friend of mine just got dsl last month. It was taking her half a day to download windows updates.

My first cable modem wore out after 3-4 years and I'd to get a new one. Cable or DSL is surely faster. Hope you feel better and get your voice back.

Actually I'm the last dial-up holdout...

Sometime a month or two ago, I got home one day and my landline wasn't working -- couldn't get a dial tone, couldn't dial out, or get calls in. And so no internet or e-mail either.

I called the phone company (used my cell phone to call) and they found a problem in the line, somewhere out in the world. They sent someone out and got it fixed the next day. I got a follow-up message on my voice mail from the repair technician, who said that the problem had been caused by a broken wire. Wasn't even sure if they still had wires any more...

Anna, thanks. I hope I get it back soon, too. It's hard to communicate with notes or pantomime.

Lyle, actually dsl runs through those same wires, just in a different place, ie my phone can be working, but dsl can go down. I'd been having connection problems a few years ago and no-one could figure out why when my husband's home business phone went out. Turned out it was a bad line from pole to house. I told the guy about my dsl, so he said he would just go ahead and replace the regular phone line, too, even though that one was working. Solved the dsl problem. The technology of it all goes right over my head.

I had to replace my modem a couple of years ago. They do go bad. I'm about to get Wi-Fi at home (I held out on that for awhile) and just ordered the Airport Express for Mac. I'll be surfing from the couch soon.

Hi Collin
Yes, this is my second one, so they do have a limited life. I got my first laptop about 6 months ago for when I don't feel up to sitting up at the desktop and got wi-fi, too. It's great. I usually use that one to stretch out and read links people send or indulge myself in youtubes. Hey, couch surfing...go, Col, go!

Hi Pris,

I found your blog and your poetry through Terri's post on CFS Warrior. It's great to meet you through your poetry. I love your poems. I've just begun to read them and look forward to spending lots of time on your websites. Congratulations of having a book of your poems published.

Toni, thanks so much. I'm glad you're enjoying the poems. I'm excited about this book, too. As you know...we're slow and it took me a long time. It's actually my fourth out, but the longest. I have one short poetry book and two small chapbooks. One chapbook is sold out but the other is also by Lummox, so I'm pleased.

It's all very nice until something goes wrong, isn't it?

We also have a router but that darn's thing plug went. We tried all sorts, thinking it was the actual router. A whole day wasted on it.

Hope you get back online okay Pris and I hope that you are feeling good in yourself.

I know...my brand new computer replacing my ancient one started turning off unexpectedly. I tried everything. Turns out that the battery backup side of my surge protector was going and that was the problem. I found out when it died completely. While I was waiting for a new one I plugged into my old surge protector and all worked fine.

I'm doing okay. The big discoveries in my illness...a retrovirus ....have me so unsettled. Do I dare hope? I've hoped so many times before and then been let down. I'm trying to tread a fine line. A lot of people are feeling this way.
